Originally from Boston, I have lived in China on and off for a total of ~2 years and am now in Washington, DC.
I am a "K through MA," which means I decided to go straight to graduate school following my experience at Pomona as an Asian Studies major. The mentorship from professors at Pomona was amazing and I was well-prepared to succeed in further education. At Johns Hopkins SAIS, I spent a year studying at a joint Hopkins-Nanjing University program taking classes on Chinese politics and society in mandarin from Nanjing University professors before finishing my degree at SAIS in DC. While in Nanjing, I also worked for a Chinese digital art outsourcing company, helping develop their sales pipeline to large international video game developers. In DC, I focused on building my quant skills, including macroeconomics and econometrics. Following brief internships before and after graduation, I joined BowerGroupAsia as a research director for Northeast Asia, advising Fortune 100 companies on the commercial impact of local and regional politics.
My advice to students: Employers rarely expect school to teach you exactly how to do the job they are hiring you for and anticipate you needing to learn. Demonstrating you have taken the time and effort to become an expert in something else and are eager learn something new is valuable and often a strength for liberal arts grads.
