Make the most of your experience at Pomona! You have every resource available to you and endless opportunities to make lifelong friendships and to build a strong foundation for your future career.
I knew pretty early on that I wanted to go to medical school, so I tailored my classes and extracurricular activities (getting involved in translational research projects, volunteering at local hospitals) towards that. I also made sure to get involved on campus in other ways including student government and mentoring programs.
I applied to medical school straight out of college but also applied to various research opportunities, and after receiving the IRTA fellowship at the NIH, I made the decision to defer my admissions to UCI for a year, a decision I highly encourage you to consider as it gave me some time to experience life outside of academia. The road to becoming a physician is rigorous; you won't regret taking a year or two for yourself. That being said, I love what I do and find my career to be very rewarding and challenging.
Feel free to reach out to me if you're interested in healthcare. While I've taken a more traditional route to medicine, I have many friends who've had other careers prior to medical school, so if you decide medicine is right for you, congratulations and welcome to the team!
