From my very first day of college, I knew I would return to Baltimore to give back to the city that’s given me everything. Baltimore has a reputation among its residents for being a black hole; people don’t leave. I grew up with this hopelessness caused by decades of systemic racism. Pomona gave me the tools and words to identify and dismantle the every-day injustices. I am eternally grateful to my professors who pushed me to write a grant my senior year of college to work with young people in Baltimore to tackle social exclusion in our central public space. I now lead a nonprofit organization that employs 25 youth (and a couple adults too) that sprung from this initial grant. I’d love to speak with any entrepreneurial Sagehens who want to do social justice work. I can advise on what it’s like to develop a board, raise money and hone a vision.
